And here another thing began.

The road had run out of answers, and so a second question started underneath the first one, quieter and far more dangerous: not what is the meaning of life, but who is the one asking?

From here the two run together. When the road goes quiet, look inward. When looking inward goes quiet, the road picks it up again.
